Reading the Bible Together

This month we will be looking at Daniel.

The book of Daniel is apocalyptic literature that includes several strange visions that point to the coming Son of Man, the messianic King who will deliver Israel and the nations. Daniel is also about hope and faith in the midst of exile, as Daniel remains faithful to Yahweh and hopeful for the restoration of Israel.

Spectrum Arts Update

September offered a creative shift of perspective to each of the Spectrum sessions.

At the beginning of the month Gill gave free rein to artistic licence in a session titled “Driven to Abstraction”: images of food inspiring abstract compositions of shape, texture and colour.  Our accompanying Bible message contrasted Mary’s attention to Jesus, during his visit to Martha’s home, with Martha’s distraction by her worries of the day (Luke 10: 38-42).  Through this we were encouraged to reflect on our own priorities, and on how we may welcome Jesus into our lives as he invites each of us to be in his presence.

Our second session of September was the annual “Spectrum Special”!  We were hugely blessed by visiting artist Alistair Gordon who led us through the day.  Alistair specialises on a technique called “trompe-l‘oeil” (deceive the eye) – painting optical illusions and compound images that aren’t all quite what they seem!  It was a treat of a day – both through the creativity he inspired in our novice attempts, and through his gentle, open Godly manner and words to us all.  After lunch he spoke about “Why Art Matters” (the title of one of his books) emphasising, alongside his personal story, each person’s value to our creating God in whose likeness we are made.

We pray that, alongside artistic shifts in perspective, God may have prompted shifts of heart and mind through his Spirit to all who attended.
